Cream Depilatories

Cream Depilatories

Facts: Very common, but some consumers find that the ingredients cause skin irritation or even chemical burns. Depilatories contain chemicals with a high degree of acidity (low pH) such as sodium thioglycolate, or calcium thioglycolate. They react with the protein structure of hair breaking it down. Nair is one known manufacturer of cream depilatories.

Description: A chemical is distributed on the part of the body to be treated; it then dissolves hair at the skin's surface.

Advantages: Inexpensive, fast, mostly painless, can be done at home, available almost anywhere.

Disadvantages: Effect lasts a short time-- anywhere from a few hours to several days. Dark-haired users may have visible "shadow" of dark hair under skin. Often requires use every two or three days. May cause user to get skin irritation and cuts. Can be a severe skin and eye irritant.
